Shit

I guess i’ve dropped the ball and haven’t posted over here in a long time.  but heres a cool update.

I’m SPINNING WITH PRETTY LIGHTS, and I have been working on a ton of originals to be released in January or February at some time.  So look out for that.  Also, the gigs keep rolling along with the two residencies, so feel free to come and hang out at Dicky’s on Sundays and Shorty’s on Wednesdays.

Confessions of a DJ

I’m sure you’ve all heard the expression “You can’t please all of the people all of the time.”  Sometimes we like to believe that we can keep everyone happy, but more often than not, this just simply isn’t the case.  This weekend, i got a crash course in not pleasing people.

Friday night i got my first taste of Towson’s weekend bar scene as the entertainment.  Let me tell you- unless places are going to start putting in DJ booths and paying me a lot more, this will simply never happen again.  There were too many fights and I hate not being able to play the music I want to play (hell- half of being a DJ is the appeal of choosing the music).  The worst/best moment of Friday night, however, is by far one of my favorite DJ-ing moments of all times.

As we all (or most of us at this point) know, Towson isn’t really kind to the techno dj.  After several reminders from the bar owner to mix up my set, the words finally sunk in and i did what any 22 year old in need of cash would do and whored myself out to the masses.

Confession 1: Girls Still Love Britney Spears

Don’t say that you are over her- you aren’t.  You can be the most stuck up music snob or claim to be just “too old” for Britney, but theres something about the mere mention of her name that gets you excited.  And when the beat drops, you stand around giddily and look around for the go ahead to lose your mind like you were in middle school.  Oops I did it again.

Confession 2: Rap music sucks.

I know that this isn’t news- or even a “confession”- everyone knows where i stand on rap.  BUT NOW I HAVE PROOF that rap really is the lowest common denominator.  After taking the cue that Lil Wayne was on the top of everyone’s list for most coveted songs on halloween (fuckers didn’t even want to hear the flying purple people eater), I played (emphasis on play not spun) 3 songs in a row.  Heres what happened next:

random girl: Hey- are you taking requests

me: Yes

random girl: Well- me and my girls were talking and we were wondering if you could stop playing all this shitty rap music and play some lil Wayne.

Confused? Yeah i was too- I think I gave the girl an “are you serious” look and lucked out as one of the last fights of the evening sent a kid hurtling into my set up.  Saved by the bell or something like that i guess.  Either way- COME ON- ARE YOU SERIOUS? I’ve never been so happy to see someone get their ass beat.  For those of you who were there… wasn’t that kid just such a dick bag?

Along with this confession i’ll have to give a thank you, also, to Erica C. for her heroics late in the evening.  As the fighting had pissed me off a great deal, I stopped taking requests and started spinning a set that had people dancing harder (better faster and stronger) than they had all night.  As one young lady came up asking for rap, Erica sprung into action yelling TECHNO repeatedly in the girls face until she walked away unhappy.  Thank you so much for the much needed relief.  Much love.

Confession 3: Those Pretty Boys from Jersey and NY… They Still Love Screamo.

Subject Says it All.  I’ll spin hip hop- I’ll dabble in the rap… man- if you want me to drop some classic fun i’ll be obliged, but don’t, under any circumstance, EVER come up to me and ask me to play emo.  Maybe freshman or sophomore year of high school i would have taken you up on this… but seriously… have some respect for yourself.  grow up. life is unfair so learn how to play the game- I’m never going to play a band with a tragic name… get over it.

Other than that- pretty ridiculous weekend everyone.  Good show.

I’ll see you all tonight at Bassnectar, tomorrow at the Polls, and Thursday night for the post election WHOMPTACULAR at Shorty’s in Canton.

Whomp we can believe in.

The elephant goes fwaaamp.

…yeah kinda.

What up October?

So it’s been a while since i’ve posted and there are some things we should probably catch up on.

First off- Austin is on board now which is pretty tight.  He’s a halfway decent writer, no?  Think you know about getting crazy in Baltimore?   Sit back and watch the master go to work.

Next things next- just got a huge gig FRIDAY OCT.31st at LIL DICKY’S IN TOWSON– for the halloween party going on up on York Road.  Hopefully i’ll see some familiar faces coming in.  We are going to be calling it “MONSTER-MASH-UPS” (thanks to keating on the name help), with all of your favorite monster songs and the dopest beats i can drunkenly find at any given moment.

And in keeping with the gig theme.  NOV. 6th @ SHORTY’S CANTON.  This spot used to be owned by Charles Feelgood and if you know anything about the EDM (if edm throws you for a loop then you can probably sit this part out) scene in Baltimore, that name should be ringing lots of bells.  The man is a pioneer and his former bar reflects that.  The CLEANEST SOUND SYSTEM IN CANTON, hands down.  So come check it out.  We are going to be throwing down a bunch more there in the coming months so stay posted on that.

HOW AM I GOING TO STAY POSTED ON ALL OF THIS NEWS, BRYAN? you are asking.

WELL

Head on over to facebook where Max has set up the DJ Bryan Cosgrove fan page.  This is new territory to me, but we’ll be posting all the gigs, all the pics from said gigs, and a bunch of music up there pretty often.

So there you have it folks.  In terms of Gigs, we are now caught up.  Still throwing down every sunday at lil Dicky’s… and let me tell you, things have been getting straight up crazy there after hours recently.  but there’s no room on such a classy blog for these tales of decadence.  guess you’ll just have to come up and find out for yourselves.

at this rate, i’ll see ya’ll again in about a month.

The Empire Strikes Back:

Here is the mix i promised the other night.  Its some pretty solid tech with a nice helping of house… and a huge dose of blatant disrespect.  Hope you all enjoy it.

 ENJOY.

Oct. 1st- I’m pissed.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven’t been posting often but i’ve been busy as all hell.  between commuting to dc, dj-ing some crazy raves, and putting up with a bunch of other non-sense, things have just been spinning out of control.  but busy is good, and so is money.

I’ve decided that i’m going to run this page as a regular style blog, not as much a news thing as a look into my extensive journeys around the music industry.  hopefully you’ll enjoy reading it and i won’t slack off a lot, but lets face it- i’m quite the lazy bastard.

so there i was…

Dicky’s has been a lot of fun and if you haven’t been out yet i highly recommend it.  the drink specials are awesome and the bartender is attractive.  i am assuming most of the readers of this blog are max’s friends from a different state, so if you’d like to see me, make his indie loving ass book me in NOLA and we’ll beat the hell out of some sound systems.

Anyway, here’s a few lessons i’ve learned in the last two months since going to work for the man.

1.  the music industry is an incredibly frustrating place.  for the most part, everyone who is in charge could give a damn about your ideas, regardless of how brilliant they are (those are the only type of ideas i have…).  I am as guilty as anyone else for stealing music, and i really don’t plan on starting to pay anytime soon, but i guess that has a lot to do with the problem.  either way, the revolution of the industry is upon us and you can’t help but be excited for what this means for music as a whole.

2. its incredibly hard to get into the music industry, but once you are in, word travels fast.  so while you are coming up, do yourself, and the rest of us, a favor and keep your mouth shut.  don’t tell people you know people you don’t know well.  don’t tell other people things that people tell you candidly.  and for the love of god. DO NOT LEAK MUSIC BEFORE ITS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT.  saw that happen last week- it was ugly.  all of these things will wind you up on the black list and your time in the industry will run out very soon.

3. this kind of piggy backs on 2- don’t surround yourself with idiots.  idiots include but are not limited to loud mouth friends, girl friends, drug addicts, and assholes.  no one likes that drunk girl who lights the wrong end of the cigarette, no one likes the kid who can’t stand up at the end of the night and almost falls into your rig, and you really can’t trust drug addicts, no matter how you cut it.  assholes can be funny, but you have to make sure they use some discretion and timing.

there are more but i’d like to give an example of rules 2 and 3 for a moment.  this will probably lead to a tangent and ultimately the total derailment of this post.

so there i was…

Saturday night i was invited to spin a rave in baltimore city.   at the end of the night i politely introduced myself to another “artist” who had gone on earlier in the evening.  after noticing a stack of promo cd’s next to his gear (that no one had taken mind you) i offered to take one, give it a listen, and, if it was deemed worthy, put it in the hands of my boss.  As to not drop names, we’ll just say my boss was part of one of the biggest dj outfits ever to hit the world, seriously, he’s outrageous.

yesterday when i got into work one of my bosses informs me that he had run into this dj’s girlfriend a day earlier and she hated on me with great vigor- stating that thought i was a phony and that clearly i didn’t work for him.  well guess what sweet heart…

i’m glad you ruined a potential connection for your boy friend with your big whore mouth.  i wasn’t going to say anything, but his set was all deadmau5 and deadmau5 side projects anyway.  which is sweet… if your name is joel zimmerman and you made/wrote all that music.  and to you, mystery dj- i hope you enjoyed your 2 year anniversary with this girl.  really.

deep breaths.

#2- word travels fast in this industry and people act with vengeance, i kid you not. at some point everyone makes a decision on how much their investments are doing to grow their company or careers.  often times if you are shooting your mouth off about people to their friends, you are going to burn a lot of bridges whether you know it at the time or not.  i’ve seen it happen multiple times and i’m glad to have been able to set fire to the gasoline said girl spewed upon that one.

making your way in the world today takes everything you got.**

happy october everyone.  keep an eye out tonight or tomorrow for my new, special dedication mix entitled: “Your Girlfriend is a ___ and Your Set was all Deadmau5: The SK 1 Mix.”

it’ll be posted here and on my myspace, http://www.myspace.com/bryancosgrove.

** i was looking up the lyrics to the cheers theme song tonight and found the lost verses that never aired on tv… these are awesome…

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

All those night when you’ve got no lights,
The check is in the mail;
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it’s tail;
And your third fiance didn’t show;

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee’s dead;
The morning’s looking bright;
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn’t even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there’s one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came..
